I'm probably being dense, but is the Shaftesbury dark for six months before this opens? I can't remember if there's something coming in for the interim or not!

I don't think it needed major work on it, audiences seemed to have enjoyed it as did the critics, a few trims here and there but nothing huge

Regarding the possible 6 month closure of the Shaftesbury.
The theatre, as most on here should know by now, is now under new management. With this, I am being told, that they will now start to spend a lot of money in refurbishment of FOH areas, backstage and general upgrading of very, very old equipment on stage.
We all know the dodgy history of this gem of a theatre in the last 2 to 3 decades- the last major overhaul was in the mid 80s prior to 'They're Playing Our Song' opening- this will , hopefully see a brand new era for a major West End musical house that by right should have gone many moons ago.

Regarding 'Flashdance' at the Shaftesbury.

I understand The Shaftesbury has got one of the newest roofs in West End theatre?

One redeeming feature for Flashdance is that they are doing two shows on a Friday, I am surprised this never caught on and more shows adopted this, I am even more surprised that this idea did not export to New York also?

New York is terrible for flexible matinee days. It's always Wednesday at 2pm.

If any show did a tuesday/thursday/friday matinee, I would see that show purely for that reason!

Regarding a Flashdance-style 5pm Friday matinee on Broadway, that won't happen because Actor's Equity requires at least 2 hours between the ending of one performance and the beginning of the next.

As for weekday matinees other than Wednesday, it's worked for so long nobody wants to try a different day. A Catered Affair tried Thursday matinees (in addition to 1 on Wednesday), but it closed 3 weeks after those started so it's difficult to tell how succesful they were. Either way, there are a ton a little old ladies out there who ONLY see Wednesday matinees and wouldn't know what to do with themselves if they had to change their routine.

Good plan to refurbish - but I think it's only happening as they can't find a filler.

Shame Gypsy never happened, I think it would have been great - another failed attempt to bring this show over. Menier - is simply down to you now.
