In this photo the Bishop of Bradford meets the young actress playing Cinderella in pantomime at the Bradford Alhambra sometime in the late 1940s.

The Actress and the Bishop: a seasonal quiz

The young actress went on to become a name-above-the-title star (and sometimes in it) on British radio, television, stage and screen and has remained a stalwart of British comedy ever since. She's probably about due for a tribute night.

Though not primarily associated with musicals, the last time I saw her was a couple of years ago, when she was playing a small cameo in a big West End musical.

But who is she?

It looks like June Whitfield, but I can't think what West End musical she's been in recently?

It is indeed, the beautiful June Whitfield and her latest West End appearance was at the Aldwych Theatre in 'Bedroomm Farce'

Musically, she appeared in the limited performance run of 'On The Town' with ENO at the Coliseum.

That was quick - I thought this would last at least 'til the New Year.

Well done Marius!

And a good but incorrect guess from Matt!

Bloody hell Mama! I knew you'd get this but I didn't think you'd have the programme as well!!!

I think that's extra tubs of ice cream at the interval for everyone (and maybe Mama's ice cream gets plonked in a G&T!).

Edit: and that programme explains why I've found some photographs of Wilfred Pickles as well.

There is a poster in the Rovers Return, Coronation Street of Wilfred Pickles in variety at the Palace Theatre Manchester.
Its by the dart board just by the toilets!!!
Its been there for a number of years now, ever since Roy Barraclough, as Alec Gilroy, was licensee there.
The poster is from Roy Barracloughs private collection.

Thanks for that on the town picture I'd forgotten it was her in that!

She was sadly wasted in the Doctor Who Christmas ep, though in the behind the scenes bits she seemed quite happy-mainly because her role involved pinching David Tennant's bottom repeatedly!
