A hotel room in Leeds. A Tabloid journalist Ian brings a young woman to spend the night with him.
We are exposed to their progressively abusive relationship; until their world is blown apart.
Sarah Kane's Blasted first opened at The Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in 1995 where it made front-page news with its brutal depiction of rape, torture and violence. Reviled and revered in equal measure, Kane has been labelled as 'the most notorious playwright in Britain' and her writing has undoubtedly changed the course of 21st Century Theatre.
Lyric Artistic Director Sean Holmes, said:
'In 1995 I saw an early preview of the original production of Blasted. It remains seared on my memory. It is the only new play I have ever seen that can be genuinely described as important. It changed the landscape in which we work. It's an honour to be able to direct this unique play.'
Sean Holmes' previous credits at the Lyric Hammersmith include the smash-hit and West End transfer of Ghost Stories, the critically acclaimed A Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky and the national tour of Three Sisters in collaboration with Filter. Holmes directs AiDan Kelly as Soldier, who he previously worked with on the critically acclaimed The Man who had all the Luck (Donmar Warehouse). Kelly's work at The Abbey Theatre Dublin includes the title role in Macbeth, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui and Antigone. Danny Webb plays Ian. Webb has appeared in many popular British television programmes including A Touch of Frost, Agatha Christie's Poirot, Silent Witness, Land Girls, Holby City and Hustle. His many theatre credits include The Philanthropist (Donmar Warehouse), Michael Grandage's Richard III (Sheffield Crucible) and the UK tour of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Lydia Wilson plays CatE. Wilson will appear in the upcoming film Never Let Me Go alongside Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan.
