When Howard Brenton's new version of August Strindberg's seminal work Miss Julie received its world premiere at Theatre by The Lake this Summer, it garnered rave reviews. This November the production, directed by Tom Littler, is premiered in London at Jermyn Street Theatre.

Performances run tonight 14 November through Saturday, 2 December, with the press performance set for Wednesday, 15 November 2017. This is the first staging of Miss Julie in the West End since 1980.

Midsummer's Eve, Sweden, 1888. A night when the sun doesn't set. A night of drinking and dancing. A night to break the rules. When Julie finds herself alone on her father's estate, she gate-crashes the servants' party. In the sultry heat of that long, light night, she finds herself in a dangerous tryst with her father's manservant, Jean. A flirtatious game descends into a savage fight for survival.

The production stars Charlotte Hamblin (Downton Abbey; Dry Land - Jermyn Street Theatre), James Sheldon (The Dover Road - Jermyn Street Theatre), Izabella Urbanowicz (After the Dance - Theatre by the Lake).

The production reunites the trio of Brenton, Strindberg, and Littler, after their acclaimed collaborations on Dances of Death (Gate Theatre) and Brenton's play about Strindberg's Inferno period, The Blinding Light, which opened the Escape Season at Jermyn Street Theatre and is running until 14 October.

Miss Julie is the third play in Tom Littler's premiere season as Artistic Director of Jermyn Street Theatre. In addition to The Blinding Light, The Escape Season includes the forthcoming world premiere of Judith Burnley's Anything That Flies, directed by Alice Hamilton and starring Issy Van Randwyck and Clive Merrison and a co-production with the English Theatre Frankfurt of The Hound of the Baskervilles, directed by Lotte Wakeham which opens in December.

Jermyn Street Theatre is an arthouse theatre in the heart of the West End. A 70-seat studio, it opened in 1994, and this summer Anthony Biggs was replaced by Tom Littler as Artistic Director. This Autumn, Littler relaunched the venue as a producing house. Jermyn Street Theatre is signed up to the Equity Fringe Agreement and has promised to achieve gender parity on and off stage.
