Bristol Old Vic will celebrate its 260th anniversary with a lineup of events taking place throughout May 2026, inviting the public to take part in activities across the theatre and the city.
Founded in 1766, Bristol Old Vic is recognized as the oldest continuously operating theatre in the English-speaking world. The anniversary programming is designed to reflect both its history and its ongoing role in the community.
FAMILY DAY PARTY: THEATRE ADVENTURES FOR ALL AGES

The celebration will begin with a free Family Day featuring activities across the theatre building. Designed for children and families, the event will include a new interactive performance centered on a birthday-themed adventure, live music spanning multiple eras, craft activities, and a building-wide treasure trail. A sensory space will also be available for visitors seeking a quieter environment.
TAKE CENTRE STAGE: 260 SILENT DISCO
Saturday, May 30, 2026 | 8:00 p.m.–Midnight | Theatre Stage
The theatre’s stage will be transformed into a dancefloor for a silent disco event, where attendees can choose between multiple DJs through wireless headsets. The evening will include access to the venue’s bar and the opportunity to experience the stage from a performer’s perspective. Capacity is limited.
THE GREAT BRISTOL OLD VIC TREASURE HUNT
Throughout May 2026 | City-wide
A citywide treasure hunt will take place throughout the month, with 260 commemorative coins hidden at locations across Bristol. Participants who find a coin may keep it and can redeem it at the theatre for a complimentary item.

Bristol Old Vic will also invite members of the public to share personal milestone dates, which will be paired with archival information about performances that took place at the theatre on those same dates. Submissions will be accepted via social media and email.
