Hi Rob! How are you feeling about the coming week?

I'm just so glad to be here! I'm so grateful to be here for this big birthday - it feels like an honour to play this role in this year and during the celebration. There's such a massive following behind the show, they know they have to - and they want to - give back to the fans. Bringing back former cast members is really special, and something everyone will be touched by. It'll be a magical evening.

People around the world will see it - and so will generations of fans in the future!

I know, that's crazy! So many people were involved in the 10th anniversary dream cast, and the years have gone by and this show never gets old. It's still bringing in fans. To think that people in the future will see the cast that is now - and the quality of the recording, they can feel part of it - it's crazy! It's something I'm so pleased they're taking the opportunity to do. It'll be something to show the grandkids!

Do you think the film has had much impact?

When I auditioned for this, I thought I was too young-looking - but it was just after the film and so I think that actually helped, the fanbase became a bit younger. It was like it had relaunched - they'd gone for a younger, fresher look, and it suits the show and the musical theatre market, which is reaching out to a younger population.

What do you think it is that keeps the fans coming back after 30 years?

I think the story can apply to now. That's what touches people. There are so many aspects, so many characters. I always say with this show that you get fleeting moments with people - there's always something someone will relate to, and everyone has their favourite bits and favourite characters. It can touch such a wide range of audiences.

Rob Houchen plays Marius in Les Miserables.
