The Contemporary American Theater Festivals Releases Two Playcasts

The Contemporary American Theater Festivals at Shepherd University, named one of the top professional new play festivals in the country, has coined the term "playcast" to describe the audio dramas of their 2021 season. This summer, they produced two playcasts: Sheepdog by Kevin Artigue and The House of the Negro Insane by Terence Anthony.

This July CATF hosted Listening Parties in the parking lot of the Marinoff Theater, one of the festival's three venues. These parties, that patrons called "innovative" and "exceptional," allowed for theater lovers to come together in Shepherdstown and listen to the full playcast productions.

In addition to being heard during the Listening Parties, both of the playcasts are available through Broadway on Demand. There is a limited window to listen to the playcast. Sheepdog is available from July 23-August 20 and The House of the Negro Insane is available from July 30-August 27.

LISTEN TO THE PLAYCASTS

There are various ticket price options to listen to each of the playcasts. This pay-what-you-can system allows patrons to select the ticket price that is best for them. Each playcast can only be listened to for twenty-four hours after the "play" button is clicked. Once you start listening to the playcast, you can pause it, but you only have twenty-four hours to finish listening.

ABOUT THE PLAYS

Sheepdog by Kevin Artigue - A razor-sharp drama

A black man killed by a white cop. The white cop is the man you love. And you're a black woman and a cop. When the story keeps changing - do you trust your intuition? Or your heart? Shaken to its core, this relationship threatens the emotional health of both officers when morality and ethical conduct come into play. Kevin Artigue writes a mystery that navigates the complexities of race and relationships.

The House of the Negro Insane by Terence Anthony - A poetic, historical drama

In 1935, Taft State Hospital was one of seven psychiatric facilities in the US exclusively for "insane and idiotic negroes." Attius has been locked up at Taft for over a decade and has found some sense of peace building coffins. When two new patients interrupt his path to survival and ask him to help them escape, Attius dares to dream of a life outside of the confining walls. Terence Anthony writes a moving portrayal that explores mental, spiritual, and physical incarceration.
