BWW Feature: MAMMA MIA! By the CHARLESTON LIGHT OPERA GUILD at THE CLAY CENTER In January 2019!
Charleston Light Opera Guild announced a surprise January 2019 production of Mamma Mia! Auditions will take place in November with performances occurring in January at the Maier Performance Hall at the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences in Charleston, WV.
The popular musical began life as a stage show in 1999 with a book by Catherine Johnson, the show was then turned into a romantic comedy jukebox film in 2008 which spurred a sequel in 2018; both films were wildly popular with audiences and critics alike.
Centered around the music of ABBA, a popular band formed in the early 70's, the show follows 20-year-old Sophie as she prepares to get married on the fictional island of Kalokairi. Sophie longs for her father to walk her down the aisle but unfortunately, she does not know who he is. Determined to discover her father's identity, she discreetly searches her mother's diaries - eventually settling on three possible candidates. Without notifying her mother, she sends each man an invitation to the wedding, signing her mother's name. What follows is a hilarious and heartfelt tale which audiences around the world have fallen in love with for nearly twenty years.
As this is the first time that Mamma Mia! will be produced by a community theater in the region, the Charleston Light Opera Guild has teamed up with the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences to ensure that their production of the beloved musical will be a spectacle sure to delight fans and audiences of all ages.
