This two hour stage adaptation of Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning book is told through the eyes of a child with humor, wisdom, and understanding. While many people recall the heroism of Lee's fictional hero, attorney Atticus Finch, in defending a black man wrongly accused of rape, they often forget that Finch's client was still convicted and, ultimately, killed. It's a story about injustice, a cautionary tale, but at the same time it's a story about courage.
Seeing To Kill a Mockingbird, now at the Kennedy Center, isn’t the same experience as the novel you were quizzed on in high school or the classic 1962 film. Aaron Sorkin’s script and Bartlett Sher’s direction gain heightened context and nuance from the rise in racial violence in the last decade. The national tour with Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch, which visited D.C. in June 2022, is again at the Kennedy Center though August 27.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts today announced its 2021–2022 Theater season featuring hit Broadway musicals, acclaimed plays, Kennedy Center productions, special programming for the Center’s 50th Anniversary, and more, beginning in October 2021.
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts has announced that the previously announced performance dates for the Washington, D.C. engagement of To Kill a Mockingbird, scheduled for August 25-September 27, 2020 will be rescheduled to a later date.
To Kill A Mockingbird, Aaron Sorkin's new play, directed by Bartlett Sher, and based on Harper Lee's classic novel, will launch its coast-to-coast National Tour in August 2020 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in the heart of the nation's capital. The tour will be on the road for over two years. Additional information about the tour, including casting and additional cities, will be announced shortly.
In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed bipartisan legislation creating a National Cultural Center in the nation’s capital. In November of 1962, President and Mrs. Kennedy launched a $30 million fundraising campaign for the Center’s construction. Former President Eisenhower and his wife Mamie participated in the event which demonstrated the bipartisan support for a world-class center for the performing arts in D. C. In 1963, President Kennedy signed legislation to extend the fundraising deadline for the Center. Two months after President Kennedy’s assassination, by an Act of Congress signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 23, 1964, the nation’s National Cultural Center was designated as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. By this Act, President Kennedy’s devotion to the advancement of the performing arts in the United States was recognized.
The Kennedy Center is at 2700 F St NW, Washington, D.C., DC.
