Usher in the Holidays With Whidbey Island Centre for the Arts' HOLIDAY STORIES, 12/11-12/20

Whidbey Island Center for the Arts, under the leadership of Executive Director Stacie Burgua, presents 'Holiday Stories' three original adaptions of holiday favorites, from December 11 - 20, 2009. 

This season, WICA offers three original adaptations of holiday favorites:  

How the Grinch Stole Christmas! Adapted and directed by Kristina Sutherland ?The Grinch, whose heart is two sizes too small, hates Whoville' s holiday celebrations, and plans to steal all the presents to prevent Christmas from coming. To his amazement, Christmas comes anyway, and the Grinch discovers the true meaning of the holiday.  Cast includes Damien Cortez, Patricia Duff, Phil Jordan, Savannah Randall.

'Twas the Night Before Christmas adapted and directed by Ann Deacon ?Everyone knows the famous words: "‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house . . ." Clement C. Moore's famous poem (written in 1822) has been a holiday classic ever since. The Cast includes Morgan Bondelid, Tony Caldwell, Adrian Cook, Jameson Cook, Damien Cortez, Eric Hood, with special guests Nymbol and Nymphaea from "Nymbol's Secret Garden".

A Child's Christmas in Wales adapted and directed by Michael Barker ?A Child's Christmas in Wales is a lyrical journey back to the magic and marvel of boyhood where no two moments were ever alike and life was embraced with belief instead of doubt. On a special Christmas Eve, a grandfather shares heartwarming memories with his dearly loved grandson. In one evening he does more than recall his cherished youth . . . he relives it.  The cast includes Barton Cole, Shelley Hartle, Chloe Hood, Jack Hood, Kent Junge, Jill Johnson, Audrey Neubauer, with musical guests Keith Bowers, James Hinkey and Kristi O'Donnell.

Ann Deacon (Twas the Night - Director/Adaptation) moved from Minnesota in 1966 and attended Coupeville schools 1st the 12th grade. Going to WSU with the intention of being a Physical Education teacher, Ann found her way into the theatre department. After graduating with a BA in Theatre, she was a lighting intern at the Minneapolis Children's Theatre Company and School. Ann later served as the personal assistant to Mischa Schnider at the Marlboro Music Festival and as the Technical Director at Marlboro College. 

Michael Barker (A Child's Christmas in Wales - Director/Adaptation) began his Whidbey Island directorial debut shortly after arriving as a transplant from Southern California with the performance of A Thousand Clowns at Whidbey Children's Theatre. His extensive Southern California professional directorial credits include his favorites; The Kentucky Cycle, Midsummer Night's Dream, The Boor, Candy and Shelley Go to the Desert, American Century, No Exit, The Tempest, Ring Lardner Adaptations and Dorothy Parker Adaptations. He has won several Dramalogue awards for directing particularly in ensemble work. Michael received his theatrical training at The American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. He worked extensively at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum as both a director and actor in over 30 productions.  He has a special fondness for these roles at TB: the Gentleman Caller in A Glass Menagerie, the writer in A Good Doctor, Kulygin and Tusenbach in Three Sisters, Tranio and Lucentio in Taming of the Shrew and Mark Twain in Americana. He had numerous roles and served on the board of directors at Theatre West in Los Angeles. Long forgotten television credits include everything from "Rockford Files" and "Archie Bunker's Place" to "Young and the Restless" and God forbid anyone saw his performances in "C.H.I.P.S. He is the co-owner, with his wife Kris, of La Vida Verde, Inc. a fair trade wholesale company that supplies stores both domestically and internationally and "VIDA" their new retail fair trade store located in Freeland. He has two amazing daughters that share his passion for all things dramatic. 

Kristina Sutherland (How the Grinch Stole Christmas! - Director/Adaptation) is a playwright, director, actor and teaching artist based in Seattle. She is the co-founder and Co-Artistic Director of Macha Monkey Productions, a nonprofit dedicated to creating fearless, funny, female theatre. Her recent directing credits include the critically acclaimed production of Kid Simple, a radio play in the flesh by JorDan Harrison, Fall Off Night by Allison Gregory, The Cowgirl Play by Sutherland and Prewitt, Melancholy Play by Sarah Ruhl, GameGirl by Jennifer Pratt, and Dukthul by Red Eagle Soaring. Besides authoring Franklin and Figaro (WICA - June 2009), Kristina has co-created three plays with Desiree Prewitt: The Cowgirl Play, R (The Swashbuckling Tale of Anne Bonny and Mary Read) and Live Girls Do Elektra. These works have been produced in Seattle, across Canada in numerous fringe theatre festivals and in Albuquerque's Revolutions Festival.
