Fresh off its rolling World Premiere, the mind bending IN A WORD brings playwright Lauren Yee back to The Hub. Three time Helen Hayes nominee Kerri Rambowleads the cast as Fiona, a mother wrestling with the loss of her son Tristan, kidnapped years earlier. Rambow is no stranger to Yee's work having earned rave reviews playing the Hatmaker's Wife in Hub's production of THE HATMAKER'S WIFE (formally A MAN, HIS WIFE, AND HIS HAT).

Rambow stars opposite Theater Alliance Artistic Director Colin Hovde, who plays Fiona's unmoored husband, Guy. Hovde is a Helen Hayes nominated and winning director who recently directed A YEAR WITH FROG AND TOAD at Imagination Stage.

The cast is completed by Robert Bowen Smith, who takes on multiple roles including both Tristan and Tristan's kidnapper. Smith just completed an extended run of THE COLLABORATORS at Spooky Action Theatre and was recently Helen Hayes nominated for his work at Flying V.

This emotionally acrobatic and sublime piece, which plays with words in a magical light; is directed by Hub's Associate Artistic Director Matt Bassett. Bassett began on stage with The Hub in 2011's THE CLOCKMAKER and then moved on to directing 2015's THE TYPOGRAPHER'S DREAM, 2014's multiple-Helen-Hayes-Award-nominated FAILURE: A LOVE STORY, assistant-directing 2012's Helen-Hayes-Award-nominated BIG LOVE as well as directing many table and staged readings as part of The Hub's new play development. Matt's DMV directing work includes Arts on the Horizon (with whom he's created two world premieres and is in development of a third in 2016/2017), The Catholic University of America, Montgomery College, Montgomery College's Summer Dinner Theatre, Compass Rose Theater, Kaiser Permanente's Educational Theatre and Imagination Stage's Education Department.

The Hub is thrilled to bring back playwright Lauren Yee. Yee was born and raised in San Francisco, and received her bachelor's degree from Yale University, and her MFA in playwriting from UCSD, where she studied under Naomi Iizuka. Her full-length work has been produced at AlterTheater, Artists at Play, The Chance Theatre, City Lights Theatre Company, Cleveland Public Theatre, Company One, Encore Theatre/Z Space, fu-GEN, The Hub Theatre, Impact Theatre, Moxie Theatre, Mu Performing Arts, Pan Asian Rep, SF Playhouse, SIS Productions, Victory Gardens Theatre, and others. Her work has also been developed at Lincoln Center Theatre/LCT3, the Goodman Theatre, The Public Theater, Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre, Playwrights Realm, Second Stage Theatre, Centerstage, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Aurora Theatre, the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, East West Players, the Hangar Theatre, Kitchen Dog Theatre, the Magic Theatre, Orlando Shakespeare Festival, PlayPenn, and the Playwrights' Center. Her play THE HATMAKER'S WIFE was an Outer Critics Circle nominee for the John Gassner Award for best play by a new American playwright. CREVICE was a Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle nominee for Best Play. Most recently IN A WORD won the Bay Area Glickman Award. Lauren is a member of the Ma-Yi Theatre Writers Lab and a Playwrights' Center Core Writer. She is currently under commission from the Denver Center, Lincoln Center Theatre/LCT3, Mixed Blood Theatre, New World Symphony, Portland Center Stage, South Coast Rep, and Trinity Rep.

IN A WORD introduces us to Fiona and Guy who live in the remains of a life that once included their adopted son Tristan. Today is the two-year anniversary of Tristan's disappearance, and still, nothing makes sense to Fiona. Not her blasé husband, the incompetent detective, or the neighborhood kidnapper who keeps introducing himself in the checkout line. As Fiona delves back into her memories of that fateful day to uncover that crucial missing piece, grief and comedy collide, and ordinary turns of phrase take on dangerous new meanings.

The Creative Team for IN A WORD includes: Betsy Zuck (Scenic Design) Catherine Girardi(Lighting Design), Patrick Calhoun (Composer and Sound Design), Maria Vetsch (Costume Design),Deb Crerie and Kay Rzasa (Props Design), and William Pommerening (Stage Management).
