ShenanArts announces OPEN AUDITIONS for our mainstage holiday show The Butterfingers Angel, by William Gibson and directed by Anne Armentrout. Created by one of America's major dramatists, this touching, funny and imaginative retelling of the Christmas story brings new relevance to its timeless subject.

NEEDED:  six males, four females, four children

AUDITION DATES:  Please attend on either
SUNDAY, Oct. 3 or MONDAY, Oct. 4
from 6:00 - 9:00 pm
at the nTelos Theatre, Gypsy Hill Place
This is not a musical, but as well as reading from the script, each person will be asked to sing a verse of a well-known carol.  In addition to acting skills and basic singing ability, the ability to dance (or at least to move "creatively") will be a plus.  Being able to play a portable instrument, such as a guitar, recorder or concertina, will be a big plus.

Production Dates:  Dec. 3-5, 10-12, 16
QUESTIONS?  rain.shadow.studio@verizon.net  OR 540.887.6521

Roles Available:

ANGEL -- (late teens to early twenties) He has a good heart and good intentions and a big job to do.  In spite of his virtues, he tends to be awkward, to fumble, and to falter.  He is a lovable, if unlikely hero.

MARY -- (mid-teens to early twenties) Strong, resourceful, spunky, she is a young woman who knows her own mind and will learn much about her own heart.

JOSEPH -- (at least forty-something)  Reliable, diligent, practical, he is  a man whom life and love seem to have passed by.  Like many who seem "just ordinary," he discovers he can rise to an extraordinary occasion.

MAN IN GREY -- (late twenties to fifties)  A suave and confident man of the world, a manager and a manipulator, he is also the mystery man, the one "written between the lines."  He is also clearly seen beneath the characters of the COURIER and HEROD, the drum-playing, paranoid megalomaniacal king.

TREE -- (late twenties to forties)  If she had a carol, it would be "I'm Just A Girl Who Can't Say No." Her ambitions are for all the perks and pleasures of a successful and sexy chorus girl.

THREE KINGS -- (adult, any age)  Are they truly "wise men," or just three men trying to read the map of life in order to find what really matters?  These three seekers after truth and light also play the THREE LOUTS who are Mary's brothers, males barely evolved beyond brutish cave dwellers.

TWO WOMEN -- (twenties to forties)  Sometimes good Jewish wives and mothers of Nazareth, sometimes the exotic and glamorous wives of Herod.

GIRL -- (nine to thirteen)  A child at play at times, but most importantly the innkeeper's daughter, who manages things very well in her parent's absence.

DONKEY, COW, SHEEP -- (three children, boys or girls, ten to early teens)  Not just talking animals, but wise and wise-cracking domestic beasts, they do their best to cope with the weirdness of humans.  When not animals, they are young children of Nazareth.

NICE to KNOW:

  • This is not a children's play, but it is a play with roles for children.
  • This is not a musical, but it is a play with music.
  • This is not a religious play, but it is a play that draws on religious traditions and stories.
  • This is not an anti-religious play, but it is a play that reflects modern sensibilities, sometimes uses dark comedy,

and definitely reflects humanity's confusions and questions.
