THE MONTHLY CALENDAR IS BACK!

Many of you requested a calendar of events for local theatre, like we tried back in October. Well, it is back with the New Year, and includes all of the major openings for the month, and discounts available to readers of this site. New this time – high school performances will be included on the list. ANYONE who is involved with a production at any level can feel free to email me with details at jameshoward@broadwayworld.com. AUDITION NOTICE: MOBTOWN PLAYERS

The Mobtown Players announce auditions for their upcoming production, Double X: The Bad-Ass Lands. Auditions will be held this Saturday, January 13 from 2 to 5PM at their Meadow Mill space in Hampden.    They are seeking 8 women and 2 men of all ages and ethnicities for a series of original short plays by and about women living in major metropolitan areas across the United States for a 1 month run in April at The Mobtown Theater in Hampden's Meadow Mill.   The play's synopsis reads, "Travel across the country in just one night, meeting the bold, bad and beautiful women of USA's boldest, baddest and most beautiful cities, as leading women playwrights from leading urban locales debut a series of short new plays right here in the bad-ass city of Baltimore!"  Featured Cities: New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Nashville and Dallas.  Sides will be provided for the audition. OPENING THIS WEEK:

  • Baltimore Shakespeare Festival presents Paula Vogel/>/>/>’s Desdemona, A Play About a Handkerchief beginning January 12 – January 28th at the Elizabethan stage at St. Mary’s. Performances run Thursday – Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 5PM. Thursday performances are $15.00, and $25.00 regular Friday – Sunday, with $20.00 tickets for teachers, students, seniors and artists of any genre with ID. The play will be directed by Raine Bode, and features Tara Garwood and Beth Hylton (both members of Actors Equity). (Review to be posted 01/13/2007)
  •  Listen to My Heart: The Songs of David Friedman opens on Friday, January 12 at the Vagabond Theatre in Fell’s Point.  The musical review, directed by Tom Wyatt, features an ensemble includes Jeff Burch, Ken Ewing (Thoroughly Modern Millie at Toby’s Columbia), Chuck Graham, Dan Johnson (The Full Monty at Cockpit-in-Court), Holly Pasciullo, Elizabeth Ruddy, Alyson Shirk, Beth Weber, Dennis Wood and Shannon Wollman (RepStage’s Tintypes). Accompaniment is by Elizabeth Fink.  Listen to My Heart was originally produced in New York City ­ Upstairs at Studio 54 and has now been performed in 8 American cities, as well as London, and is slated for many more cities and for foreign countries as far away as Australia. David Friedman's award-winning songs have been recorded by the likes of Diana Ross, Barry Manilow, Nancy LaMott, Laurie Beechman, Petula Clark and Jason Alexander, among others. His new musical, Chasing Nicolette, written with Peter Kellogg, is slated for Broadway next season.  Listen to My Heart runs at The Vags from January 12th thru February 11th, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM and Sundays at 2PM.  There will be no show on Sunday, January 14th; and an additional 8PM performance has been added on Thursday, February 8th.  For further information and reservations call 410 563 9135.  (Review to be posted 01/15/2007)

CONTINUING THIS WEEK:

  • Spotlighters brings the classic comedy Mary, Mary to its space through February 4. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 3PM, with a special Thursday performance at 8PM on February 1. The show, directed by Sherrionne Brown, features Steve Avelleyra, Christina Enoch, Roy Hammond, Denis L. Latkowski, and Vicki Margolis. Avelleyra, Enoch and Latkowski were featured in last year’s And Then There Were None, and Margolis was featured in Mobtown’s The Goat, or Who is Sylvia? CLOSING THIS WEEK:

  • CenterStage presents the Rodgers and Hart musical classic, The Boys from />/>Syracuse. Based on Shakespeare’s hilarious Comedy of Errors and set during the age of vaudeville and burlesque, this musical runs through January 14th. Tickets run from $10 - $65. Students and senior citizens can receive a half price ticket with ID at the door, the same day they see the show.   • David Sedaris’ The Santaland Diaries continues this week at />/>Montgomery />College. The comedy, directed by Joe Brady/>/>/> and starring Bruce Nelson (Stones in His Pockets, School for Scandal), runs January 11 - 14. Don’t let the title fool you, though.   • Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Baltimore is presenting is award-winning original musical, It’s a Wonderful Life, based on the classic holiday film. The production stars Matthew Schleigh (Buddy, Ragtime) in the Jimmy Stewart role. The production runs through January 14th, with a varying performance schedule.   • Toby’s Dinner Theatre of Columbia presents the holiday musical classic, Here’s Love, through January 14th, 2007.
