Keith Murphy and Sam Amidon present a double bill concert at Sandglass ranging from Keith's thoughtful arrangements of traditional ballads from Newfoundland and New England to Sam's hypnotizing reinterpretations of ageless Americana.

Sam Amidon has shaken the alternative music world with his gripping reinterpretations of traditional American songs. With a series of albums in quick succession, he has won widespread critical acclaim and moved into the orbit of some of the most creative contemporary musicians, including Bill Frisell, Glen Hansard, and Beth Orton. Sam returns to his home for the holidays and will collaborate with his old bandmate from the days of Popcorn Behavior/ Assembly.

Murphy has recently embarked on a solo project featuring songs from his native Newfoundland as well as old ballads collected in New England. A long time ensemble player, this solo show draws on a wider range of guitar sounds, including alternate guitar tunings as well as melodic and percussive finger styles. A capella singing, mandolin and French Canadian foot percussion bring an even greater and impressive range to Murphy's sound. Keith performs often with his wife, fiddler Becky Tracy, as well as the Boston based group, Childsplay and he continues to work on various singing projects with Tony Barrand. Murphy teaches regularly at the BMC where he also organizes special events, including the Northern Roots Festival in January. Keith was a founding member of Nightingale with which he performed and recorded for many years.

This concert will also be a rare chance for Amidon and Murphy to revisit some music from earlier projects together and to join forces on some of their recent songs.
