WOYZECK Will Come to Scarborough's Stephen Joseph Theatre
Rob Salmon directs Georg Büchner's classic tragedy with a cast including Robyn Chambers and Malachi Clarke
The Young Company at the Stephen Joseph Theatre will perform Woyzeck next month. The show can be seen at the Scarborough Theatre from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 May.
Franz Woyzeck is a soldier trapped in poverty, bullied by his superiors and tormented by voices. To earn extra money, he signs up for medical experiments run by the military doctor. Soon he's losing his grip on reality and is pushed to the very edge of sanity.
Raw and unforgettable, Woyzeck is a haunting exploration of love, jealousy and the forces that drive us over the edge.
It's considered to be one of the first modern plays, a naturalistic tragedy and a social critique about a soldier driven to madness. This striking adaptation of Georg Büchner's unfinished masterpiece is brought vividly to life by the acclaimed Stephen Joseph Theatre Young Company.
Woyzeck is directed and designed by the SJT's Head of Creative Engagement, Rob Salmon, who says: “After the overwhelming response to their first two productions we wanted to set the Young Company a real challenge. Woyzeck is a startling drama, and they've really raised their game to give our audiences a great night out at the theatre.”
The cast is Robyn Chambers, Ellie Cherry, Malachi Clarke, AJ Cole, Delilah D'Arcy, Tom Dawes, Lola Hooper, Will Ireland, Harry Lee, Keane Liley, Jack Pickering, Grace Williamson and Charlie Wright.
The Lighting Designer is Mark ‘Tigger' Johnson, and the Costume Supervisor is Isabel Innes.
This is third production from the Young Company, following last year's Education, Education, Education and 2024's DNA. The Young Company is a talent development programme for young creatives aged 16-25 in and around Scarborough, giving them the opportunity to develop skills for a career in the creative industries.
Woyzeck can be seen at the SJT at 7.30pm from Wednesday 13 to Saturday 16 May, with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm.
