THE NAME by 2023 Nobel Prize winning author Jon Fosse will make its UK stage premiere in May. A deeply human portrait of belief, doubt and the longing to be seen, The Name is translated by Gregory Motton and directed by Simon Usher. Performances will run Tuesday 19 May - Saturday 6 June at the White Bear Theatre, 138 Kennington Park Road, Kennington, London, SE11 4DJ.
A family house by the sea. A young pregnant woman sits on a sofa. Her partner enters. Her sister returns. Then her mother. Then the father...
What should be a simple family gathering becomes something quietly unsettling. Questions circle. Silence lingers. The unborn child waits at the centre of the room. The question of its name is never answered. The question of its origin arises.
The Name is a haunting and tender exploration of family, of communication withheld, and of the authority of silence. The play that won the Norwegian Ibsen Award established Jon Fosse - the most performed Norwegian playwright after Henrik Ibsen - as one of Europe's most distinctive dramatic voices.
Now brought to London for the first time by Hornsey–Pennell Productions and directed by Simon Usher, whose work spans The National Theatre, The Royal Court and the West End, this production offers a rare opportunity to encounter Fosse's major work in an intimate setting.
About the Cast
Jasmin Dufa Pitt (Girl) is an Icelandic actress who has worked on stage at Southwark Playhouse, Actors East, and the Lyric Hammersmith. Her TV includes Hildur, FBI: International, and Johanna in Trapped (BBC).
Daf Thomas (Boy) played Arvirargus in the RSC's Cymbeline directed by Gregory Doran. He stars as Rudolf Wobbe in the upcoming feature film Truth & Treason.
Valerie Gogan (Mother) has worked with The Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and in the West End, appearing in, among others, A Doll's House, Les Liaisons Dangereuses, The Rehearsal and The Secret Rapture.
Tony Bell (Father) has acted for 40 years notably in Ed Hall's Propeller Shakespeare company touring globally to USA, Europe, Asia and South America. West End credits include Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream (Comedy Theatre); Rose Rage, Treasure Island and A Man for All Seasons at the Haymarket Theatre.
Marie Thorseth Molnes (Sister) is a Norwegian actress who recently graduated from Regent's University, London and the National Youth Theatre. Her stage credits include; What Fatima Did and Find Me (Cockpit Theatre).
Jan Martin (Bjarne) has recently performed internationally in theatres in Switzerland and Finland, and in London at the Marylebone Theatre, where he runs the Actors Collective.
