Stephen Sondheim's COMPANY Will Come to London's Bridewell Theatre
Director Emily Phillips leads an intimate staging transforming the space into Bobby's apartment
Sedos will present the multi award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical Company for the next two weeks (7-16 May) in an intimate, innovative staging which will transform the Bridewell Theatre into Bobby's apartment.
Company is a sharp, witty and deeply human portrait of modern relationships, told through a kaleidoscope of vignettes that capture the joy, chaos and heartbreak of being part of someone else's life.
Friends, lovers, exes and almosts swirl around bachelor Bobby as he celebrates his 35th birthday, in a heady mix of cocktails, candour and Sondheim's razor-sharp score, from the blistering comedy of Getting Married Today to the aching vulnerability of Being Alive.
Director Emily Phillips says: “The older you get, the more Company stops being a comedy and starts becoming a mirror. What first drew me to this piece was its refusal to offer certainty. It doesn't tell us what love should look like, or who is getting it ‘right' – instead, it lives in the contradictions, the questions, and the quiet anxieties that so often go unspoken.
"This production began with a question that felt both simple and impossibly complex: what does connection look like now?
“In a world of curated lives, constant communication, and carefully constructed identities, it's easier than ever to appear fulfilled while feeling something entirely different underneath. Bobby's experience of being surrounded by people, yet still searching for something more, felt deeply familiar to me, and to many of us in the room.”
Sedos last performed Company in our centenary year, 2005, with several members of the cast and team from that show still involved in the society. In a further link with our history, the Trustees of Sedos have awarded this new production of Company a grant from the Jeremy Lewis Fund, a bequest left to the society by a former chair of Sedos.
This has allowed the team to realise their vision of building Bobby's full apartment in the Bridewell Theatre, giving audiences a totally fresh experience in the space – and inviting you to join the party.
In this reimagining, the walls between audience and performer disappear. You'll find yourself in the thick of it, clinking glasses, dodging dance moves, and catching every smirk, sigh, and side-eye up close.
