Marlowe Theatre to Celebrate 1,000th Performance Milestone, 13 June
The venue, which opened after redevelopment in October 2011, reaches its 1,000th performance: a concert by the Philharmonia. By coincidence, the orchestra played at the opening gala.
Productions in the main auditorium at The Marlowe have ranged from opera to pantomime, ballet to comedy, and included appearances from the country's leading companies, such as The National Theatre, Glyndebourne and Matthew Bourne.
The Royal Shakespeare Company make their first visit in November (Henry IV Parts I & II), and other future highlights include One Man, Two Guvnors, Jersey Boys and The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time.
Marlowe Director Mark Everett said it was appropriate the Philharmonia - the theatre's resident orchestra - will be on stage for the 1,000th performance. He added: "The calibre and variety of all our shows speak volumes for how far the theatre has come. And some of the industry's biggest producers, such as Cameron Macintosh, Bill Kenwright and Kenny Wax, share this view!"
"The success of the main auditorium continues - we are programming months, and even years, in advance - and audience numbers continue to grow. Our smaller venue, The Marlowe Studio, and our education and creative work, also continue to expand and flourish."
Managing Director of the Philharmonia Orchestra David Whelton said: 'Having had the privilege of giving the very first performance at the Marlowe Theatre when it opened its doors in 2011, the Philharmonia is absolutely delighted to be joining with the celebrations for the 1,000th. From 1st to 1,000th, the Philharmonia is extremely proud to have been resident orchestra at one of the most innovative venues in the country. To help mark this fantastic milestone, the orchestra will be performing one of the biggest and best symphonies of all time, Shostakovich's Symphony No 5 - it's going to be quite an evening!"
The Philharmonia's Marlowe concerts are supported by Pharon Independent Financial Advisers.
