MISS JULIE
by August Strindberg in an version by Frank McGuinness
Directed by Oliver Baird
Produced by Elevate Theatre Company

In their debut production, Elevate Theatre Company presents Strindberg's masterpiece about power, sex and class at the Greenwich Playhouse.

It is Midsummer's Eve in the kitchen of the Count where his daughter Julie and his valet Jean begin a dangerous game of seemingly innocent flirtation. After sleeping together the subsequent conflict between sexual passion and social position leads to Julie's suicide. Strindberg's scandalous masterpiece is regarded as one of the most influential works of modern drama. With its explicit sexuality and brazen language Miss Julie was initially regarded as too controversial and banned from performance.

August Strindberg (1849-1912) was a Swedish playwright, novelist, and essayist. As the son of a servant he described his childhood as being filled with "emotional insecurity, poverty, religious fanaticism and neglect." Strindberg's career spanned more than four decades, although his work often met with harsh criticism. Early rejection made him buck against those in power and created a man who called himself a 'socialist, a nihilist, a republican, and anti-reactionary!" Strindberg wanted to create something fresh and new: what he wrote was Miss Julie.

Frank McGuinness is a successful playwright who has translated numerous works and a number of classics such as A Doll's House (Ibsen), Three Sisters (Chekhov), and Oedipus (Sophocles).

"There aren't many plays that capture our own modern predicament so clearly, so passionately."
