Launching on August 16th 2011 in the Assembly Gardens Bosco Tent, Get Happy Comedy and Leicester Square Theatre present The New Comedian of the Year Competition 2011!

Co-produced by AlleyKat Productions, Get Happy Comedy and Leicester Square Theatre, the competition will see over 300 comedians compete in heats throughout October, only 12 of whom will make the final in the Main House at LST on December 11th.

The launch event will feature the winners of previous competitions; Tim Shishodia and Rob Beckett, along with the 2010 runners-up; Mark Stephenson and Ian Smith. They will be supported by brief sets from some of the most exciting finalists and semi-finalists from last year. Compering will be Get Happy's David Hardcastle and 2009 finalist Luke Benson. Other features of the afternoon include the death-defying audience match that is Helium Theatre, along with an old-fashioned Working Men's Club style raffle.

Initially created by Get Happy and Leicester Square Theatre to develop a friendly competition in as fun and relaxed an environment as possible, NCY is a fantastic platform for some of the most exciting new talent in comedy. Many of the finalists and semi-finalists from the competition, are now taking their own hour long shows to the 2011 Edinburgh Fringe and include up-and-coming performers such as Rob Beckett, Max Dowler, Jess Fostekew, Tez Ilyas, Kate Lucas, Rachel Parris, Tim Shishodia, Ian Smith, Diane Spencer, Mark Stephenson, Rachel Stubbings and Gary Tro.

Entries for the 2011 competition will open from the August 16th launch and will be via email to newcomedian@leicestersquaretheatre.com. Anyone with five minutes of original material, who has fewer than five years experience of performing on the comedy circuit is eligible to enter, although professional comics and past finalists cannot apply. Stand-up, sketch, character, variety and musical acts are all welcome.
