Polyphonic Ground Presents, a series of concerts for the culturally curious, serves up a mix of tropical soul music, traditional Latin beats, hip-hop, spoken word, and afrobeat at its second monthly concert at Revival Bar.
Batuki Music, a presenter of African music and art, and Uma Nota Culture, a presenter of Brazilian, Latin, Caribbean, Funk and Soul live acts and DJs, come together in a co-presentation of Beny Esguerra & New Tradition (Toronto by way of Colombia), Matatu Express (Ontario), and The Future Primitive (Toronto), at Revival Bar on Thursday, October 12, 2017.
Born in Colombia, Ruben 'Beny' Esguerra is a multi-instrumentalist, lyricist, arts educator and leader of the New Tradition big band. Originally created to accompany International Artists with some of the most sought-after musicians in Toronto, Beny Esguerra & New Tradition combine spoken word and hip-hop with Latin rhythms and melodies.
Comprised of JUNO Award-winning musicians, Matatu Express is a newly formed collective that encompasses the beautiful melodies and intoxicating rhythms of today's popular African music. Donne Roberts, Madagascar Slim, Adam "Professor" Solomon, Pa Joe, Kofi Ackah, Ebenezer Agyekum, and dancer Mabinty Sylla draw from their roots from across Africa to represent the varying styles and melodies from region to region.
Fusing classic Latin American and Caribbean styles with raw, emotive and catchy song writing is what The Future Primitive call "Tropical Soul music." At the heart of their sound lies a desire to connect the dots between the here and now of modern Toronto life, with the traditional sounds of their childhood roots and Latin American heritage.
Polyphonic Ground, a new collaborative working model brings together presenters of diverse live music who are all committed to Toronto as a global music city.
Future Polyphonic Ground Presents concerts are scheduled for November 9, programmed by Link Music Lab and Good Kind Productions; and December 14, curated by Lula Music & Arts and Music Africa.
