INTO THE WOODS Film Music Arranger David Krane Surprises Randolph Academy Students After a Performance

By: Aug. 02, 2014

The graduating students of Toronto's Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, Canada's premiere Triple Threat post- secondary training program, appearing in the academy's production of Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" received quite a surprise Friday night . Among backstage visitors congratulating them was David Krane, the music arranger of Disney's forthcoming musical adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp.

Krane, a prominent Broadway, Film and TV composer, is no stranger to Toronto, having contributed to such Tony Award-winning musicals as "Ragtime," "Show Boat" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" that each received their world premiere here. Krane also composed dance music and music arrangements for the Academy Award Best Picture "Chicago," directed by Rob Marshall who is also directing "Into the Woods." The film adaptation opens Christmas Day.

The team behind Into the Woods includes music director Jeannie Wyse, a former vocal coach on theCBC series Over the Rainbow, and Children's Musical Director for Mirvish's The Sound of Music. She also served as Assistant Conductor/Keyboardist for the Toronto run of Jersey Boys. Set design is by Anna Treusch, recently nominated for a Dora Award for costume design of UnSpun Theatre's The Tin Drum. Lighting design is by Siobhán Sleath, a two-time recipient of the Stratford Festival's Tom Patterson Award (2010, 2011).

Into the Woods premiered in 1986 at San Diego's Old Globe Theatre and in November 1987 at Broadway's Martin Beck Theater. Nominated for 10 Tony Awards, it won for Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason). It also won Best Musical awards from Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics' Circle, and a Grammy Award for its cast recording. Since then it has received professional productions, including London and Broadway revivals, all over the world, including in some open air settings.

The production of "Into the Woods" at Randolph Academy runs now through August 9. Tickets are available on Ticketmaster.
