Humber River Shakespeare Co., now in its fifth season of touring Shakespeare, will present the supernatural tragedy of MACBETH accross Toronto and York from July 10 to August 5. Full listings below.

Led by the prophecies of witches, Macbeth conspires with his wife on an ambitious plot to rule the realm...at any cost.

His reign, baptized in blood, spirals out of control and Macbeth's deeds come back to tear him down. Tormented by visions and guilt while the costs of his crimes take their toll, what fate awaits the former war hero?

Performances are staged in the open air, with a focus on actors—not elaborate sets—to tell the Bard’s timeless stories. “This allows us to have a direct connection with our audiences and ensures that theatre is affordable and accessible to all,” says Artistic Producer Sara Moyle.

The production, directed by Artistic Director Kevin Hammond, who is currently Assistant Directing at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, is the company’s first tragedy after four years of staging comedies. “We wanted to do something special for our fifth season, and many of our audience members over the last four years kept asking us when we might do our first tragedy,” said Hammond.

Unique heritage buildings and picturesque parks continue to act as natural play spaces for the company, and several new venues and communities have been added to the tour, namely: Casa Loma, The Richmond Hill Heritage Centre and The McMichael Canadian Art Collection.

Humber River Shakespeare is proud to work with 2012 presenting partners The Ontario Trillium Foundation, The Ontario Arts Council and Arts Society King. “We are pleased to have such generous support from these organizations, which allow us to continue to create and produce professional theatre and educational programs for a growing audience base,” says Moyle. “The relationships we’ve built with local organizations, businesses and volunteers are also essential to our success.”

The cast of the show are Kanika Ambrose, Steve Coombes, Shannon Currie, Eli Ham, Sara Moyle, Neil Silcox, David Sklar. The set was designed by Andrea Mittler, costumes by Nina Okens and fights by Siobhan Richardson and music by Hugh Barnett.
