Casting Changes Announced For COC's ANNA BOLENA And THE NIGHTINGALE AND OTHER SHORT FABLES
The Canadian Opera Company welcomes American bass-baritone Christian Van Horn to the cast of this spring's production of Anna Bolena, making his role debut as Enrico VIII. Van Horn steps in for Eric Owens who, regrettably, has withdrawn due to health issues. Moldovan bass Oleg Tsibulko will sing the part of the Emperor in The Nightingale and Other Short Fables, while Canadian bass Michael Uloth now performs the role of The Bonze.
Praised for the "finesse and refinement" of his voice (Opera Wire), Van Horn has sung in some of the greatest opera houses in the world, including the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Bayerische Staatsoper, Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, and Dutch National Opera among others. He previously appeared at the COC as Escamillo in Carmen (2016), Colline in La Bohème (2013) and Angelotti in Tosca (2012).
Oleg Tsibulko makes his North American debut with his roles in The Nightingale and Other Short Fables. In addition to the Emperor in The Nightingale, he appears as a baritone soloist in The Fox. With an extensive repertoire that includes works by Rossini, Verdi, Mozart and Tchaikovsky, Tsibulko's voice has been described as "mellifluous" (The Telegraph), with a "deep, nourished legato bass and an undeniable nobility" (ConcertoNet). He returns for the COC's 2018/2019 season as Prince Gremin in Eugene Onegin.
A graduate of the COC Ensemble Studio, Michael Uloth has performed with the Glimmerglass Festival, Saskatoon Opera and Opéra National de Lyon. Recently he sang the role of Merlin in Vivier's Kopernikus at the Banff Centre, a performance that the Calgary Herald called "beckoning" and "intense." His previous COC credits include roles in Death in Venice (2010) and The Magic Flute (2010).
Anna Bolena runs for nine performances on April 28, May 3, 5, 8, 11, 16, 20, 24, 26, 2018.
The Nightingale and Other Short Fables runs for nine performances on April 13, 14, 22, May 1, 2, 10, 12, 13, 19, 2018.
