Since 2011, Russell Hornsby's career has taken him to Portland, OR as Detective Hank Griffin on NBC's supernatural drama, GRIMM. However, 2016 brought him back to his roots. Though he has had considerable success on screens large and small, the actor has always found a home in the works of August Wilson. Hornsby won a Drama Desk Award as part of the cast of the original Off-Broadway cast of JITNEY in 2000, and earned a Lortel nomination in 2007 for playing the title role in KING HEDLEY II. But, it was his Broadway debut in 2010's revival of FENCES set him on his path to the Academy Awards. (more...)

From the Broadway stage to the Pulitzer Prize, back to Broadway, and now as a film adaptation with four Oscar nominations, FENCES has riveted audiences for more than 30 years. The film, directed by and starring Denzel Washington, is nominated for Best Picture, with Washington and Viola Davis nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. The fourth nomination is for the drama's original playwright August Wilson for Best Adapted Screenplay. Wilson died in 2005. Wilson left behind an indelible legacy of dramatic work, having penned the ambitious American Century Cycle of ten plays focusing on the African-American experience in the 20th century. (more...)

MANCHESTER BY THE SEA is without a doubt one of the most praised films coming out of this awards season. It's been nominated for six Academy Awards, and has already taken home a Golden Globe and two BAFTAs. Starting Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges, the film tells the story of a man who, in the wake of his brother's death, finds himself named sole guardian of his nephew. The movie, written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Kenneth Lonergan, will make you cry, and if it doesn't, you need to watch it again because you clearly missed something the first time around. Last night two-time Tony Award-winner Viola Davis made history as the first African-American to win an Emmy in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. She was recognized for her role as the brilliant attorney and professor Annalise Keating on the Shonda Rhimes drama HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER. In addition to her Emmy and Tonys, Davis has won three Drama Desks and three SAG Awards. During her acceptance speech, Davis quoted Harriet Tubman and talked about breaking boundaries and redefining what Hollywood thinks of as beautiful. (more...)
