Conejo Players Theatre to Present ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST
The play, written by Dale Wasserman and based on the novel by Ken Kesey, was originally staged by CPT in June 1979 as the theatre's 100th production. At the time, the Thousand Oaks News-Chronicle noted that Wasserman himself attended the opening performance -- adding that "Cuckoo's Nest is an entertaining evening with some excellent performances." Now, almost exactly 39 years (and some 200 productions) later, former CPT President Deidre Parmenter helms a talented cast in this Tony Award-winning piece.
The show follows R.P. McMurphy, portrayed by Michael Worden -- a charming rogue who contrives to serve a short sentence in an airy mental institution rather than in a prison. This, he learns, was a mistake; he clashes with the fierce, martinet head nurse Ratched, played by Danielle McFadden. McMurphy winds up leading the other patients out of introversion; staging a revolt so that they can see the World Series on television; and even arranging a rollicking midnight party with liquor and "chippies." Ultimately, he learns the hard way that insubordination will not be tolerated ...
In addition to Worden and McFadden, the cast includes David White, Dan Wilner, Patrick McGrath, Shelby Fry, Kelly Green, Benjamin Wilson, William Hubbard, John Eslick, Jason Ravi Carpenter, Noah Terry, Hugh McManigal, Don Johnson, Lois Lorback, and Michelle Jacobson.
The show is directed by Parmenter, produced by Jeremy Zeller, and assistant directed by David Parmenter -- with costumes by Elena Mills and Barbara Mazeika, and set design by Leo Zeller. Note: This production is rated R for language.
