A West End and Broadway sensation, the Almeida Theatre production of the 2015 Olivier Award winner for Best Play, King Charles III by Mike Bartlett, is presented by Sydney Theatre Company at Roslyn Packer Theatre from 31 March to 30 April 2016 (Opening Night: Saturday 2 April at 7.30pm).

The production is directed by Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold, with Robert Powell in the title role. King Charles III is co-produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Stuart Thompson Productions, Tulchin Bartner Productions, Charles Diamond and the Almeida Theatre in association with Birmingham Repertory Theatre and by arrangement with Lee Dean.

The Queen is dead. Having waited a lifetime to fulfil his destiny, Prince Charles ascends the throne with Camilla by his side. As William, Kate and Harry look on, Charles wrestles with his new responsibilities...but how to rule? Let the royal games begin...

Confronting the contradictions of monarchy and democracy and exploring power and betrayal, the play turns a Shakespearean lens on relationships in the world's most famous and exposed family.

"Attendance is compulsory" pronounced the UK Telegraph's critic Dominic Cavendish, and so it proved to be for the sell-out West End season and UK tour of a work described by the New Statesman as the "boldest and most provocative play about the royal family in British theatrical history". In New York, King Charles III has been deemed "flat-out brilliant" and "an invaluable gift" by Ben Brantley of The New York Times and "breathtakingly audacious" (New York Magazine).

STC's Australia-exclusive season of King Charles III follows previous offerings of the best of new international plays by those who created them, such as Steppenwolf's August: Osage County, the National Theatre's One Man, Two Guvnors, the Abbey Theatre's Terminus and Olwen Fouéré's riverrun.

London's Almeida Theatre makes bold new work that asks big questions, of plays, of theatre and the world we live in. Recent highlights have included the award winning Oresteia and live streams of 100-actor-strong performances of Homer's Iliad and Odyssey (part of the Almeida Greek festival). International work currently includes American Psycho and King Charles III on Broadway. Past notable productions include three-times Olivier award-winning Ghosts (Almeida, West End and BAM, New York) and five-times Olivier award-winning Chimerica (Almeida, West End).
