The Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows will commemorate the centenary of the Armistice that ended the First World War with a concert on Sunday 11 November at Verbrugghen Hall, Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
Together with Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra students, the 2018 Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows will perform At the Eleventh Hour, a program featuring composers from Britain, France, Germany and Russia who served in World War I. The concert will also include Edgar Bainton's Three Pieces for Orchestra, written during his internment at a prison camp in Ruhleben, Germany. Following the end of the First World War, Bainton went on to become the third Director of the Sydney Conservatorium and launched the Conservatorium Opera School.
Artistic Director of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship, Roger Benedict, highlighted the significance of featuring the particular list of composers as part of the program. "At the Eleventh Hour includes composers who served on both fronts - some who also tragically lost their lives during the war," said Benedict.
"Having the next generation of artists perform this concert - the Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellows and students from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music - is a reminder of all the young lives lost during the war. With this centenary of Armistice concert, we remember all those who have given their lives for their country."
The concert will feature works by Edgar Bainton, George Butterworth, Edward Elgar, Nikolai Myaskovsky, Maurice Ravel and Rudi Stephan.
Tickets for At the Eleventh Hour are available via sydneysymphony.com or the SSO Box Office on (02) 8215 4600.
