Maskeradbalen is inspired by a historical event, the murder of Gustav III. The Opera was written in the mid-19th century, and because of the political mood in Europe and the Italian theatre censorship forced Verdi and his lyricist Somma to rewrite the document and transfer the Opera to Boston. Here the Director Tobias Theorell opted for the Italian version of Scribes "Gustave III, ou Le bal masqué". But the people around the King is partially different roles than in reality.
