Le nozze di Figaro is a brilliantly convoluted but fully human comedy of lust, desire, and, often farcical trickery in a rigidly hierarchical society. It is also one of the most beloved works of the opera world. The story centres on the Count's desire to bed his wife’s servant girl Susanna, who is betrothed to marry her beloved Figaro, the Count's servant...
In this interpretation by Stephen Langridge, our Artistic Director for Opera/Drama, we find ourselves in Andalusia toward the end of the Franco era. As in the 18th century version, class conflict and revolutionary ideas permeate the work. But, there is also passion, joy and forgiveness – in harmony with Mozart's perpetually youthful, deceptively simple, wondrous music.
The production, which premiered in autumn 2014, drew an enthusiastic response from reviewers and audiences alike. Daniel Hällström, who then sang the part of Figaro, has moved up in the world of Figaro and will sing the part of Count Almaviva. However, Malin Hartelius remains as the Count’s strong, plaintive countess, and Sofie Asplund returns with her brilliant portrayal of Susanna. Figaro will be portrayed by Markus Schwartz, who shared the role with Hällström in 2014.
