When Engelbert Humperdinck wrote an opera about Hänsel und Gretel for his own nieces and nephews, naturally he was not aware of what an beloved masterpiece it would turn out to be. Now, finally, it is to be staged at The Göteborg Opera.
In this production, the story takes place in the present day. Hänsel and Gretel's parents seem to have little time for them, so they start to play and imagine this exciting story. Doesn't the gingerbread house look suspiciously like their own house? And the witch – she looks familiar somehow.
After a significant career, Matilda Paulsson, is now going to meet the Gothenburg audience as Hansel, while the role of Gretel will be shared between Elisabeth Meyer and Sofie Asplund. You may have seen Sophie before as Maria in West Side Story, performed here in 2011-2012. Susanne Resmark guarantees that the gingerbread-baking Witch is deliciously terrifying. German-born conductor Henrik Schaefer, Musical Director of The Göteborg Opera Orchestra, has grown up hearing this music.
