The prominent German director Anna Bergmann sets up a crossover production of Bizet's classic story of CARMEN. New code is developing.

Free she was born and free she will die!

One of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the world. A magnificent drama and love story about the independent Carmen, in herself an image for passion, integrity and freedom. With Anna Bergmann's direction, a completely new version is taking form on stage,a new code developing for opera and theatre.

Uppsala City Theatre artistic director Petra Brylander invited Anna Bergmann to Uppsala after working with her already before at Malmö City Theatre. This time around with an idea to give Bergmann even more freedom.

A crossover production developing. Arias and duets by both opera artists and actors, live music as well as sound archicture, dubstep and deeptech mixed with Bizet's classic music. Each discipline considered. On stage: performing arts seen anew, theatre, opera and electronic music transformed and weaved together with movement, videoprojections and lighting design. A completely new audience experience of Bizets Carmen. Still preserving the story.

"The opera world is grand. There are hundreds of musicians, choir singers and soloists, and a massive amount of music. But it is often slow. Theatre, on the other hand is quick and works with smaller ensembles and stages. At Uppsala City Theatre, we are combining both genres. We lean in on Bizet's timeless and beautiful music and develop the strong scenes of the story." - Tobias Schwenke, musical director

"Theatre and opera. The artistic expression of these two art forms give a dramatic base for new performing arts experiences. I look forward to giving voice to Carmen's emotions, letting them fly high and deep in our soul." - Anna Bergmann, director

Carmen will premiere at Uppsala City Theatre on September 23, 2017.

Uppsala City Theatre's vision is to be a local scene with an international outlook.

Uppsala City Theatre is a vibrant artistic meeting place where local, national and international topics are shared. Our role is to produce and present a complex and rich repertoire, including the charged issues of contemporary time. We want to give access to the yet unexplored, even when it may appear to be uncomfortable, and thereby be a developing force.

Our vision puts creativity up front, and we believe that the residents of Uppsala should have access to an open, challenging and vital theatre.
