The PVAMU music department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The department offers courses leading to the Bachelor of Arts in Music with three degree concentrations: EC-12 teacher certification, music performance, and general music. A minor in music is also offered. The education curriculum prepares music majors for the teaching profession and for certification to teach EC-12 in the state of Texas. The performance curriculum prepares students for a career in performance in their respective performance areas. The general music degree is a music major in combination with a minor in another field of study. All curricula prepares students for advanced studies at the graduate level. Courses for non-majors are available and some satisfy common core requirements. All music ensembles are open to non-majors by audition.
