Gentleman's Guide y Hedwig son los vencedores de los Tony 2014

La 68º Edición de los Premios Tony, celebrada en el Radio City Music Hall, ha sido para todos algo predecible en los resultados y poco espectacular para lo que acostumbran en Broadway en las más recientes ediciones. Si bien uno de los claros protagonistas de la noche ha sido Neil Patrick Harris, habitual presentador de los premios y que se ha llevado a casa el Tony por su papel protagonista en Hedwig and the Angry Inch, el que debería haber brillado como en la edición de 2004 ha sido el australiano Hugh Jackman que ha presentado la gala con su habitual savoir-faire pero sin destacar ni en chistes ingeniosos ni en números asombrosos, como merece "the Biggest Night on Broadway".

Los grandes triunfadores en las categorías de musicales han sido A Gentleman's Guide To Love And Murder, que se ha llevado 4 Premios Tony (Mejor Dirección, Mejor Libreto, Mejor Vestuario y Mejor Musical) y Hedwig and the Angry Inch, que se ha llevado 3, Mejor Actor para Neil Patrick Harris, Mejor Actriz de Reparto para Lena Hall y Mejor Revival de un Musical.

Les siguen en número The Bridges of Madison County, la versión musical de la novela de Robert James Waller, que se ha llevado el Tony a Mejores Orquestaciones y Mejor Partitura, ambas para Jason Robert Brown, y que cerró anticipadamente en Broadway el pasado 18 de mayo. También Beautiful, el musical sobre la vida de Carole King, se ha llevado el premio al Mejor Diseño de Sonido y Mejor Actriz Principal para Jessie Mueller.

Solo se han llevado un Tony Rocky (Mejor Escenografía), Aladdin (Mejor Actor de Reparto para James Monroe Iglehart) y After Midnight (Mejor Coreografía).

Audra McDonald, por su parte, ha conseguido su sexto premio Tony, esta vez a la Mejor Actriz Principal en una obra de texto por su papel de Billie Holiday en Lady Day's At Emerson's Bar and Grill, un hito histórico, superando a Angela Lansbury y Julie Harris.

Los habituales números musicales de los espectáculos nominados han incluído algunas joyas, como la actuación del reparto de Violet, con Sutton Foster como protagonista, y un fenomenla coro góspel, y el rompedor número de Neil Patrick Harris cantando 'Sugar Daddy' con la banda de Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Además, como avance, se han presentado temas de dos musicales nuevos: The Last Ship, interpretado por Sting, y un tema de Finding Neverland, interpretado por Jennifer Hudson. Wicked también ha tenido su momento de protagonismo ya que se ha celebrado los diez años del musical en Broadway con la interpretación del tema 'For Good', con las dos actrices que dan vida a Elphaba y Glinda actualmente en el Gershwin Theatre.
