Acting Ensemble Stage Presents THE STRANGE BUT TRUE STORY OF HAZEL MCNALLY, Now thru 4/7
The Acting Ensemble Stage Company presents The Strange But Ture Story of Hazel McNally or The South Bend Baby Doll Murder Case. Based on the real trial of South Bend resident Hazel McNally, who in 1922 shocked the nation when she was charged with murdering her twin babies. Hazel pleads her innocence, claiming her twins were dolls and it was all a hoax she played on her husband. However South Bend authorities refuse to believe her story and arrest Hazel. Did she murder her twins, or were they really just baby dolls?
The story of Hazel and her baby dolls made headlines across the country, even The New York Times was intrigued by the story and covered it daily. For two weeks in October of 1922 the nation eagerly followed the peculiar plot twists as they unfolded in Northern Indiana.
Based on the style of production developed by the Federal Theatre Project's Living Newspapers, the play is created by using the actual newspaper reports of the day. Audiences today can experience the story exactly the way the nation experienced 90 years ago.
The production opens tonight, March 29 and runs March 30, April 4, 5, and 6 at 7:30 with Sunday matinees at 2:00 on March 31 and April 7. Performance are at Studio 217, 217 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. Tickets are $12.00. More information on the production can be obtained at www.actingensemble.com.
