South Bend Civic Theatre Presents GUYS & DOLLS, Now thru 3/17

By:

South Bend Civic Theatre bets on fun with Guys and Dolls tonight, March 1-17.

Guys and Dolls features music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. A colorful world of gamblers and their gals take the stage as SBCT presents its first production of this classic of musical theatre. Tunes such as "Guys and Dolls," "I've Never Been in Love Before," "Adelaide's Lament," "Luck Be a Lady," and "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" make this show a surefire bet for entertainment!

South Bend Civic Theatre fixture David Chudzynski teams with Music Director Roy Bronkema leading a terrific cast: Sarah Beudert, Steve Chung, Melaney Gabris, Zachary Gassman, Margaret Hansen, Abby Hansen, Laura Heft, Bill Hunt, Bill Johnson, Allison Jones, Kelsey Kirbie, John Kurdelak, Sean Leyes, Ted Manier, Tim Manier, Travis E. Mayer, Natalie MacRae, Sky Medors, Rick Miller, Caitlin O'Brien, Gary Oesch, John Raab, Audrey Raymond, BJ Simpson, Dan Slattery, and Stephanie Walker.

One of Broadway's most hilarious shows, Guys and Dolls has been described as the perfect musical comedy. Based on short stories by Damon Runyon, the production first opened on Broadway in 1950, and has seen several noted revivals on, with performers such as Walter Matthau, Sheila MacRae, Alan King, Jerry Orbach, Nathan Lane, Faith Prince, Oliver Platt, and Lauren Graham taking to the Broadway stage. London productions have won numerous awards and featured performers such as Bob Hoskins, Ian Charleson, Imelda Staunton, Clarke Peters, Ewan McGregor, Jane Krakowski, and Douglas Hodge. The film version released in 1955 included Marlon Brando, Jean Simmons, Frank Sinatra and Vivian Blaine (who originated the role of Miss Adelaide). The musical was selected as the winner of the 1951 Pulitzer Prize for Drama but because of writer Abe Burrows troubles with the House Un-American Activities Committee, the trustees of the award vetoed the selection and no prize was awarded that year.

Performances take place in the Wilson Mainstage Auditorium tonight, March 1-17. Tickets are $18 Wednesdays and Thursdays (7:30 PM), and $21 Fridays, Saturdays (8:00 PM) and Sundays (3:00 PM). For tickets call the Box Office (open 12-6 weekdays) 574-234-1112 or go online www.sbct.org. Thanks to sponsors Villing and Company, the Community Foundation of St. Joseph County, and Majority Builders.
