Champion Fiddler Eileen Ivers Wraps Up Thanksgiving Holiday With All-New Show

By:
Grammy-winner Eileen Ivers brings "A Joyous Christmas" to the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center Presenting Series on Sunday, November 27 at 2 p.m. With her signature warmth, Ivers invites listeners in for a tuneful, soulful celebration capturing the true spirit of the season and telling the story of Christmas through music and dance. Audiences of all ages will recognize the holiday's universal traditions of home and hearth that are part of Christmas for Irish families. The concert interweaves age-old Wren Day songs, beloved American carols, gospel, and even a jigging J.S. Bach.

Fiddler Eileen Ivers has established herself as the pre-eminent exponent of the Irish fiddle in the world today. It is a rare and select grade of spectacular artists whose work is so boldly imaginative and clearly virtuosic that it alters the medium. The daughter of Irish immigrants, Ivers grew up in the culturally diverse Bronx, New York. Rooted in Irish traditional music since the age of eight, Ivers proceeded to win nine All-Ireland fiddle championships, a tenth on tenor banjo, and over 30 championship medals, making her one of the most awarded to compete in these prestigious competitions.

Being an Irish-American, the intrigue of learning more about the multicultural sounds of her childhood took hold. After graduating magna cum laude in mathematics from Iona College and while continuing her post-graduate work in mathematics, Eileen fully immersed herself in the different genres of music that she experienced growing up in New York. Perhaps it was the mathematical mind coupled with her passion for seeking parallels in certain traditional music styles that contributed to what has become the Signature Sound featured in much of Eileen's recordings since the late 1980s.

Eileen Ivers' performance was made possible by the Hagerty Irish Performer Series and is co-sponsored by the Keough-Naughton Institute for Irish Studies.
