Review: RENT at CLAY HIGH SCHOOL

On Friday, December 8th I had the pleasure of seeing Clay High School's production of Rent. I was a bit nervous to see a high school put on this Pulitzer and Tony winning musical that focuses on the aids epidemic of the 1980's and the many ways it affect everyone involved. Clay has done a great job shedding a positive light on this incredible show. The team Meaghan Beard (Director), Aaron Albin (Music Director), Mark Kosten (Choreographer) have put together a well oiled machine that both suites the show and the cast as whole. The choreography was well suited during moments of the show that sometimes lack due to context but they were able to use the ensemble in more ways that worked really well. The band was extraordinary to listen to throughout the show which was a difference from other high school shows. From time to time it was hard to hear the actors due to microphone issues which actors adjusted their volume. Other than that the show was very well received by audience members.

Quentin Howard who portrayed Angel a drag queen who is HIV positive does an excellent job it almost six heels throughout the show. With multiple issues with his microphone he adjusted his volume very well to cover for the issue. Lucy Beard who played Mimi has an excellent voice and carrys many pivotal scenes along. Erin Joines (Maureen) and Brielle Hall (Joanne) a lesbian couple have created such a realistic relationship. They both slay the song "Take Me or Leave Me" and leave audiences with thunderous applause. Hall has rifts and belt have left a marking impression on the audience and show a very promising future as a performer. Joines vocal talent is unbelievable throughout the show especially during her song "Over the Moon" which vocally and acting wise has left audience members roaring with laughter. Joines has a very big future ahead of her and I personally can't wait to see what comes of her career. Stand out performances include Mitchell Simmons (Mark), Connor Roberts (Rodger), Sion Shepley (Collins), Andrew Lester (Benjamin) who all did a great job creating and living in the play. Ensemble as a whole was super strong throughout and left audiences roaring after "Seasons of Love" which is an audience favorite. Unfortunately the show closed this past Saturday but make sure to check out future shows at Clay High School.
