MAFEKING ROAD is directed by Tara Notcutt and performed by Mathew Lewis and Andrew Laubscher. It was devised by the cast and director, based on an original concept by the director.
Tara Notcutt is a multiple-award-winning director and producer. Recently named as one of the Mail and Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans, she is also Artistic Director of The Pink Couch, which creates brave, original South African theatre. In 2011, Tara was invited to the prestigious Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab to spend three weeks working with some of the world’s leading young directors in New York City. Directing credits include ...MISKIEN – also winner of a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award and the Clover Soveel Beter Award for Best Production at the Aardklop Nasionale Kunstefees - and THREE LITTLE PIGS, both of which were invited to international festivals in New York, Australia and Holland. Also THOM PAIN and DREAM, BROTHER, which won a Standard Bank Silver Ovation Award for Theatre. Although only 25, Tara’s extensive list of awards already include the Fleur du Cap Rosalie van der Gucht Prize for New Directors; a Baxter Theatre/GIPCA/ Theatre Arts Admin Collective Emerging Theatre Director’s Bursary and a Best Director nomination at Aardklop Nasionale Kunstefees for …MISKIEN.
Mathew Lewis graduated from the University of Cape Town in 2009 with a degree in theatre and performance, specialising in acting. He is a co-founder of The Pink Couch with whom career highlights include touring The Couch's debut production ...MISKIEN to Amsterdam, Perth and to New York next year. As an actor, he has performed as Lenny in Beren Bellknap's LENNY AND THE WASTELAND which received a 2010 Handspring Puppet award, as well as being a puppeteer for Handspring Puppet Company's I LOVE YOU WHEN YOU'RE BREATHING, which was directed by Jason Potgieter at the 2012 National Arts Festival on the Main Programme.
Andrew Laubscher, another graduate of UCT’s Drama Department, has made his mark on the Cape Town theatre scene as an actor of impeccable timing and precision. He has performed lead Shakespeare roles at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, is part of The Mechanicals and is a long time friend of The Pink Couch. Some of Andrew’s roles include Octavius Caesar in ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, LOVBORG’S WOMEN for which he received a Fleur Du Cap nomination, Mike van Graan’s IS IT BECAUSE I'M JACK and Eric and Brian Kaplen in MRS KAPLEN AND THE WITCHDOCTOR, which toured to Prague and Romania.
