Big Stars Set for Free Meat World Music Festival in Springs

Hennie Smit, MC of the Meat World Music Festival

Meat World at the Springs Market will once again hold a music festival, this time on 2 April from 09:00. The event is free, with big stars performing throughout the event and a Ford Figo up for grabs.

The popular Hennie Smit, better known for his two-decade-long stint as Bertie in EGOLI, is the master of ceremonies and he will also sing a song or two. A well-known actor and stage personality, Smit needs no introduction. He studied Drama at the Goudstad Teacher's Training College, singing as part of the then-active Performing Arts Council of the Transvaal's opera choir during his studies. He then played several roles in radio productions for Springbok Radio and the SABC. Smit made his debut in the film PRETORIA , O PRETORIA! in 1979, and has subsequently appeared in 33 other films, of which six were international. In 2014, Smit played the role of Dêda in Lefra Productions's hit farce, MY BOETIE SE SUSSIS SE OU, during the run of which he fell seriously ill and almost died. He says:

A miracle happened and the Lord gave me a second chance. I look forward to appearing on the Meat World once more.

Smit can currently be seen in the Lefra's brand new production, AS DROME VLERKE KRY.

Pieter Koen

Smit's co-star in AS DROME VLERKE KRY, Arina de Witt, will be one of the featured acts at the Meat World Music Festival. A famous singer and actress, De Witt made her stage debut at the age of five and took part in many stage productions during her her school career. She completed her drama studies at the University of Stellenbosch, where she also sang under Professor George van der Spuy. De Witt then lived in Namibia for a few years, where she gained fame after appearances in several television and Swaruk music and drama productions. She made her South African television debut in SPIES EN PLESSIS, with her and Jan Spies's song, "Rietjiesfluit". Her first CD was released in 1992, including the songs "Wals van die Somer" and "Skatkis Vol Drome". Her wide vocal range, versatility in different genres and timeless repertoire in several languages define her unique contribution to Afrikaans music.

Pieter Koen presenter of JUKEBOX and KWELA, is one of the stars set to perform at the Meat World Music Festival. Koen has been working in the entertainment industry since 1997, when he released his debut album, RUN WITH ME. It would be seven years before EMI Music would release his second album, SKUD JOU BISCUIT, in 2004, but this sophomore release catapulted Koen to fame. Over the past decade, his popularity has continued to grow with the release of six further albums (including WELKOM IN MY WERELD, TATTOO, 3 SUSTERS, SUSTERS + SUPERMAN and HAAK ;N BIETJIE UIT) and a DVD, TATTOO LIVE. Koen has also notched up multiple SAMA nominations and a Vonk/Rapport award.

Koen is still celebrating the release of his his eighth original album, WAT DIE HART VAN VOL IS, continuing to deliver good original music with which his audiences can identify. This latest album from an ATKV- and Huisgenoot Tempo-honoured television presenter and Jacaranda 94.2 DJ is quickly being recognised as his best release yet.

One of the biggest treats of the day is sure to the visit of Liewe Heksie and all of her friends. The full production of LIEWE HEKSIE EN BOTTERBLOM will be performed at the festival. Ana van Achterbergh plays Liewe Heksie, with Botha Enslin playing Kwaaitjie Kabouter, Mattewis, Geelheks, Borrie, Griet and Karel Kat, Debré Rossouw playing Blommie Kabouter, Koning Rosekrans and Kerrie, and Phillru van Achterbergh playing Casper, die Tuindwergie and Borrie. Frans Swart has adapted the story for the stage and is also the director of the production.

Other stars who will appear at the Meat World Music Festival include Francois van Rensburg, Rembrandt van Rijn, Alwyn Oberholster and Rinel Day. Derrich Gardner from RSG will also present his popular program, BREKFIS MET DERRICH from Meat World and fans are encouraged to arrive early to experience this live broadcast. Audiences are also welcome to bring their camping chairs and picnic blankets so they can enjoy the festival from their own special spot.
