Reasons to be Pretty Happy Photos - Off-Broadway

It's not that PRETTY WOMAN THE MUSICAL is necessarily worthy of a terribly poor review, but it's not worthy of a good one either. Does it get the job done? Is it a musical? Was it executed well? Is the talent up to the task? Yes, to all these. But that's about where the good work ends. There's well directed talent up there on stage, but the book and undistinguished lyrics aren't a big help.

Interrupting Vanessa is a very sweet compact play; it is slow, compassionate, and very concise. It does not pander to its audience, and is not superfluous in its story telling. It is beautifully paced and allows for audiences of different ages to enjoy it. The message of holding on, and moving on, is gentle and very organic in its writing. Adults experience a very different play than the children do. It is such a joy to be part of telling this story.

Profiles Theatre continues its 25th Anniversary Season with the Midwest premiere of Wrecks by Resident Artist Neil LaBute, directed by Guest Artist Jason Gerace and featuring acclaimed Chicago actor John Judd. The production runs October 3 - November 17, 2013 at The Alley Stage, 4147 N. Broadway.

The national touring production of MEMPHIS, the 2010 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, kicked off on October 16, 2011 at the Orpheum Theatre in - where else - Memphis, TN, where it played through October 23. The company is now in Houston, where is plays through the weekend, and will next head to Tulsa from November 1 through November 6). New Georges (Susan Bernfield, Artistic Director; Sarah Cameron Sunde, Associate Director; Jaynie Saunders Tiller, Managing Director), the OBIE Award-winning downtown theater company founded in 1992, will present 'THE GERM PROJECT,' featuring the work of playwrights Kara Lee Corthron (directed by Kara-Lynn Vaeni), Lynn Rosen (directed by Shoshana Gold), Kathryn Walat (directed by Portia Krieger), and Anna Ziegler (directed by Beatrice Terry). The four 'germs' of full-length plays of scope and adventure commissioned by New Georges for this project will be presented together, fully produced, in a cohesive and satisfying ninety-minute intermission-less evening. There will be a connective thread to the pieces that will take place with visuals and storytelling. 'THE GERM PROJECT' will be performed at 3LD Art & Technology Center, 80 Greenwich Street (just south of Rector). Previews will begin on June 11, and the official Opening Night will be Monday, June 20 at 8:00 p.m. Performances will run through July 9.

ThroughLine Artists with J.J. Kandel and John McCormack will present SUMMER SHORTS 4, their fourth annual festival of new American short plays, at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th Street). Performances began Friday July 30th, and continue through Thursday September 2nd.

MCC Theater (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, Artistic Directors; William Cantler, Associate Artistic Director; Blake West, Executive Director) presents Beth Henley's Family Week, directed by Jonathan Demme. Performances of the four person play began at the Lucille Lortel Theatre (121 Christopher Street, NYC) on April 9 and continue through May 23, 2010.

MCC Theater will present Alexi Kaye Campbell's The Pride, under the direction of Joe Mantello (Glengarry GLen Ross, Take Me Out) in a limited engagement at the Lucille Lortel Theatre from January 27 through March 20. Opening Night is February 16. The show's stars, Hugh Dancy (Adam, Journey's End), Andrea Riseborough (Happy Go Lucky), Ben Whishaw (Bright Star, Brideshead Revisited), and Adam James(Last Chance Harvey) met the press yesterday as they gear up for the start of productions in a few weeks. Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls and renowned actor Brian Dennehy bring their artistic partnership to new heights with Eugene O'Neill's haunting drama, Desire Under the Elms?marking their fifth collaboration on O'Neill's work over two decades. Falls' cast includes stage and screen stars Carla Gugino (Entourage, Spy Kids, Sin City) Pablo Schreiber (Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Awake and Sing!), Boris McGiver (The Wire) and Daniel Stewart Sherman (Broadway's Cyrano de Bergerac). The centerpiece production of Goodman Theatre's two-month 'A Global Exploration: Eugene O'Neill in the 21st Century,' Desire Under the Elms appears January 17 ? February 22 in the Goodman's 856-seat Albert Ivar Theatre. Tickets are $25 - 82.

Daniel Goldfarb's comedy of Jewish singles has a terrific cast, swift direction and plenty of good laughs. Just try not to let the plot get in the way.
