The 2009 hit Broadway musical “Next To Normal” by Tom Kitt & Brian Yorkey will debut in Taiwan this summer (in English) at the National Taichung Theater in association with Activa Productions, Wuming Chen, and Hsiaoli Wu. 

Next To Normal explores how one suburban household copes with crisis and mental illness. Winner of three 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize, Next to Normal was also chosen as 'one of the year's ten best shows' by critics around the country, including The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, Rolling Stone and The New York Times.

On April 15, 2009, 'Next to Normal' opened on Broadway. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize, the Tony for Best Musical and to become part of a small group of musicals including 'Rent,' 'Spring Awakening,' 'Dear Evan Hansen,' 'Come From Away,' 'The Band's Visit' and 'Hamilton' which would change the nature of the American musical from pure entertainment to 'message musicals,' which tell tales of significant social relevance including examining such topics as mental and physical illness, rape, political intrigue, historical conflicts and suicide.

NEXT TO NORMAL officially opened Saturday night, June 2nd, 2018.  A multi-award and Pulitzer Prize winningmusical by Brian Yorkey and music by Tom Kitt. The acclaimed rock musical opened to a sold out house and standing ovation. An unflinching look at a suburban family struggling with the effects of mental illness.

In collaboration with Baldwin Wallace University Music Theatre Program, Beck Center for the Arts presents NEXT TO NORMAL, with music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, and directed by Victoria Bussert, with musical direction by Nancy Maier and choreography by David Zody. There is a recent trend for Cleveland area professional theatres to couple with local university drama programs. Cleveland Play House has married itself to both Cleveland State University and Case Western Reserve's MFA programs. Cleveland Public Theatre and Oberlin College have such an agreement. The connection between Beck Center and Baldwin Wallace's nationally ranked musical theatre program, has resulted in not only allowing BW students to appear on a professional stage, and the expansion of the acting pool for Beck, but the production several top notch shows.

If you were an investor in Broadway shows and someone came to you proposing a rock musical about a mother with worsening bipolar disorder, that was going to be performed as an operetta (all singing, few spoken sentences), with no show stoppers, no dancing, no chorus numbers, few laughs, and an unnerving ending, written by an author who has never had a big hit, would you invest?
