Born on December 22, 1948, in New York City, Mosher grew up in a family of artists and intellectuals. His father was a professor of English literature, and his mother was a painter. Mosher attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he studied English literature and theater. He later received an MFA in directing from Yale School of Drama.
