The scaled-down ensemble compensates with singing out, as if it’s a grand opera chorus. The small orchestra plays with immense tenderness and expression. Great care is taken so that the sound design is never oppressive but waxes and wanes with the drama. “Parade” is the best touring musical of the year so far, but the run is short. Don’t let it pass you by.

Yet Alfred Uhry’s book hammers home its points and populates the courtroom with hissable villains: the openly smarmy district attorney, the obviously perjured and nearly hypnotized witnesses, the incompetent blowhard of a defense attorney. The trial scene in “To Kill a Mockingbird” looks like a marvel of legal jurisprudence by comparison.

Another season at Des Moines Performing Arts is coming to a close, and they have saved one of the best shows of the season to close it out.
The Tony Award-winning musical Parade is playing now at The 5th Avenue Theatre as part of its highly anticipated North American Tour. This limited engagement will run through May 4.
From now through Sunday, March 9th, the recent acclaimed revival of the Broadway musical Parade will be featured at the Fisher Theatre. Parade made its Broadway debut in 1998, originally winning Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical at the 1999 Tony Awards. Then, in 2023, Parade was revived on Broadway and won Best Revival of a Musical as well as Best Direction of a Musical. The production currently in Detroit is fresh from Broadway, with Detroit being one of the first engagements on their tour.
