by Macon Prickett - Feb 16, 2018

Singer/songwriter Jessie Baylin will be releasing her new children's album, Strawberry Wind, on April 27(Amazon Music). 'Dream Catcher' is the first song that kicks off an accompanying 16-minute short-film, created by award-winning director/animator  Steven Mertens (Regina Spektor, Dan Auerbach). It tells the story of a little girl who goes to sleep only to go on a grand adventure in a vivid, cosmic dream world. In the film -- which also includes album tracks 'Supermoon,' 'Strawberry Wind,' 'Same Old Tune' and 'I Am a Dreamer' -- the dream catcher is an animated cat who guides the little girl through a wonderland of flying fishes, gremlins and other magical creatures, protecting her along the way.

BWW Interview: A Talk With Director Tom Sierchio From THE GIRL WHO INVENTED KISSING
by Lianna Albrizio - Feb 12, 2018

Despite how a shallow mind may perceive the value of a mentally handicapped timid man or a destitute, drug-taking drifter, through Director Tom Sierchio's eyes, there's so much more to them than the biased judgments of ordinary people. 'Don't let anyone tell you that's a bad thing, cause it's not,' insists the drifter, a nameless, bonny girl (Suki Waterhouse) in between drags of a marijuana cigarette to her intellectually disabled new friend Victor (Dash Mihok) of their shared weirdness in Sierchio's poignant directorial debut, The Girl Who Invented Kissing. 'It's a good thing. Only the mediocre are always at their best and I can tell already, that ain't us.'

BWW Review: Penumbra Theatre and Children's Theatre Company's First Collaboration is a Hit - the Fabulous and Inspirational THE WIZ
by Jill Schafer - Jan 30, 2018

'Combining CTC's critical literacy work and Penumbra's racial justice work allows us to forge something together that neither could do alone.' These words in the playbill of THE WIZ, the first collaboration between these two acclaimed #TCTheater companies, brought tears to my eyes before the show even started. Especially after wading through a sea of children of all shapes, sizes, colors, and creeds. In an increasingly divided world, Penumbra (one of the longest-running and most acclaimed African American theater companies in the nation) and Children's Theatre (ditto for children's theater) give me hope, as individual companies and especially in this collaboration in which an all-black cast tells a story of a young black woman who discovers her own power through the help of friends. They give me hope that maybe we can overcome our seemingly insurmountable differences and join together in song and awesome dance to solve our problems. It's possible, right? Can't you feel a brand new day? Indeed I can.

by Roy Berko - Jan 27, 2018

When Sister Rosetta Tharpe's name appeared on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Ballot, there were many who thought, Sister who? Little did those not familiar with the history of the genre, know that 'she was wailing on the guitar before Chuck Berry, shouting call and response before Little Richard, and swaying rhythmically to the music long before Elvis shook his hips.' In fact, Elvis may have learned his slim hip swiveling from the Sister Rosetta's pelvis thrusts.
