Emile Durkheim (1858-1917), whose writings still exert great influence over sociological thought, has often been called the father of the sociology of education. In Durkheim's mind, morality and education were closely linked. In this reprint of Durkheim: Essays on Morals and Education (originally published in 1979 by Routledge & Kegan Paul), Pickering makes a conscious effort to make a clear-cut distinction between the topics of education and morality, with the exception of areas which relate directly to both, for example, Durkheim's lectures on Moral Education.

The Center for Contemporary Opera (CCO) is proud to pay tribute to composer Hans Werner Henze, who died in 2012 at the age of 86, with performances of his El Cimarron (The Runaway Slave), featuring baritone Eric McKeever in the title role. Not performed in New York since 1986, El Cimarron has music direction by Sara Jobin, and stage direction by Eugenia Arsenis, singled out as stage director by Miguel Barnet, author of the book upon which the opera is based. It was written by AR Garcia, winner of the 2013 One Festival, and will also be performed by him. The play is about Nicholas De La Cruz, a young lawyer that has climbed the ladder of success through his aggressive litigation style and who has become consumed by vices. Fallen into sex addiction, alcoholism, and cocaine addiction he uses all his time for work. Plagued and haunted by nightmares prompts him to seek out therapy. In his sessions he uncovers that there is much more to his problems as he begins to talk, reflect, and reminisce about his childhood.

The Cleveland Orchestra and the Cleveland Museum of Art collaborate in the presentation of California Masterworks, two intimate Cleveland Orchestra concerts at the museum featuring works by groundbreaking composers inextricably associated with California. James Feddeck, Cleveland Orchestra assistant conductor, will conduct performances Wednesday, May 1 and Friday, May 3 in the museum's Gartner Auditorium. Andrea Rosen Gallery will be postponing the opening of its Cellblock I & Cellblock II exhibition, curated by Robert Hobbs, that was scheduled to open on November 3rd. Signature Theatre Company (Founding Artistic Director James Houghton; Executive Director Erika Mallin), announced today seven productions for its inaugural 2012 season at Signature Center (480 West 42nd Street near 10th Avenue), the company's new Frank Gehry-designed permanent home opening in February 2012. Signature Center will allow the Company to expand its programming, introduce new initiatives, and build audiences. Featuring three intimate theatres, a studio theatre, rehearsal studio and a shared lobby with café and bookstore, Signature Center will be both a theatre community hub and a neighborhood destination.
