Des Moines Performing Arts, in partnership with THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY national tour and the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, will host two special guests this weekend in Iowa's covered bridge capital. On Saturday, October 10, Elizabeth Stanley and Andrew Samonsky, who will star as Francesca Johnson and Robert Kincaid in THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY's upcoming national tour, will perform selections from the musical at the 46th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival in Winterset, Iowa at 2 p.m. The performance will take place on the Mel Penrod Stage, located on the south side of the Iowa Courthouse Square. THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY, winner of the 2014 Tony Award for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations, is famously set in Iowa and will launch its national tour at the Des Moines Civic Center November 28 - December 5. Des Moines Performing Arts is thrilled to announce that 60 schools will participate in this year's Iowa High School Musical Awards, nearly double last year's number. A statewide initiative, the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards is a yearlong education program that celebrates the extraordinary achievements of young musical theater artists. A celebration of musical talent from Iowa high school students will soon take the Des Moines Civic Center stage. On Monday, June 6, 2016 at 7:00 p.m., Des Moines Performing Arts will present the fourth annual Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase that will recognize 34 high schools from across the state. Casting Announced for Once-Lost Tennessee Williams Play NOT ABOUT NIGHTINGALES

The cast of Raven Theatre Company's premiere of Tennessee Williams' Not About Nightingales has been announced, with Raven Founding Artistic Director Michael Menendian directing. The play's action revolves around the tyrannical prison warden Boss Whalen's inhumane treatment of the inmates in his island prison.  Deciding they have had enough, and inspired by their de facto leader Butch, the inmates of Hall C fight back by waging a hunger strike. When it garners media attention, Boss Whalen responds with torture.  All the while, Whalen's inmate assistant Jim and new secretary Eva struggle with the moral dilemma of either exposing the strike and losing their jobs or assisting Whalen in keeping it under wraps.  (more...)

Peninsula Players Hosts Pre-Show Seminar 'How Novels, Films Impact Tourism'

Peninsula Players Theatre, in conjunction with its production of the Tony Award-winning musical "The Bridges of Madison County" by Jason Robert Brown and Marsha Norman, will host a pre-show seminar Thursday, August 10 starting at 6:30 p.m. in the theater. "The Bridges of Madison County"first captured the nation's attention in 1992 when Robert James Waller's novel became a best-seller, then again in 1995 as a major motion picture starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The film was shot on location in Madison County, Iowa and six covered bridges were featured.  Nowhere else in the Midwest can so many covered bridges be found so closely grouped together, thus Madison County and the bridges have become a tourist destination. The Bridges of Madison County was a hit film in 1995 for Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. The 2014 Broadway musical version with a gorgeous operatic score by Jason Robert Brown and stellar book by Marsha Norman is now playing at the Ahmanson downtown through January 17. When you look closely, there's so much to praise that it makes no sense whatsoever that the show closed early on Broadway and won only one Tony for Brown's music. It should have played on and on and walked away with a slew of awards. (more...)

Griffin Theatre Company is pleased to announce its 29th Season, featuring three productions exploring the American Dream. The 2016-17 season kicks off this fall with a rare revival of Maxwell Anderson's 1930s drama Winterset, directed by Ensemble Member Jonathan Berry (Pocatello, Balm in Gilead). The season continues next spring with the world premiere of IN TO AMERICA, a 400-year journey through the immigrant experience written by Artistic Director Bill Massolia (Letters Home) and directed by Dorothy Milne. The season concludes next summer with a newly-orchestrated (Matt Deitchman) chamber version of the Tony Award-winning musical RAGTIME, reimagined by director Scott Weinstein (Titanic, Bat Boy: The Musical) and featuring a cast of 20 actors.
