Bizet's CARMEN's big dramatic imagery, colourful crowd scenes and bold iconic music lends itself to a major spectacle like HANDA ON SYDNEY HARBOUR (HOSH), the jewel in Opera Australia's annual programme so it is understandable that they have opted to 'revive' the 2013 production.

It's that time of the year again, when the flu season gives artistic administrators big headaches, trying to fill in the blanks when a headliner calls in sick. CARMEN's been a particular headache, with mezzo Sophie Koch out of action in the title role after rehearsals had started. Luckily, Clementine Margaine--scheduled for the second cast--was able to step into her flamenco shoes for the first night--and all to follow--doing a bang-up job.

Carmen is the best-known work by French composer Georges Bizet, and one of the most famous operas in the entire art form - numbers such as the Habanera and the Toreador Song have permeated the popular consciousness as little else has. The opera's heady combination of passion, sensuality and violence initially proved too much for the stage, and it was a critical failure on its 1875 premiere. Bizet died shortly after, and never learned of the spectacular success his Carmen would achieve: the opera has been performed more than five hundred times at Covent Garden alone.

In a production that relies more on extras' physicality and odd choreography than it does on singing and musicianship - opera's intrinsic components - Barrie Kosky experiments with too many genres and fails to grasp one.
