As our divided country hurtles towards the all-important mid-term elections, it is becoming increasingly harder not to feel even a bit disenchanted with it all, as we surrender to the feeling that our political system seems to be unfairly rigged. Right smack at the center of the action are people who call themselves lobbyists---people who are hired (and are paid handsomely) by a business, an industry, or a cause to persuade government officials or even promising electoral candidates to support that specific business, industry, or cause that employ them. This is the sphere that surrounds Sarah Burgess' timely new play KINGS, which is now continuing its West Coast Premiere performances at Orange County's South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa, CA through November 10. Interesting, intriguing, but slightly too tame and a bit of a promising work-in progress, the play basically presents what most of us already know about the lobby-friendly political arena: in order to stay in 'the game,' you have to be willing to play within it.

Rattlestick Playwrights Theater is treating New York audiences to a very special experience this fall with Lewiston / Clarkston, two plays by Samuel D. Hunter presented together - with a communal meal break in between! The plays ask the big questions through the modern-day descendants of Lewis and Clark as they ponder the idea of the legacy of the American push west. While Lewiston focuses on the past, Clarkston focuses on the future - dealing with the obstacles that come with the journey and seeing life differently through the eyes of another person.
BroadwayWorld had the opportunity to chat with cast member, Leah Karpel, who stars in Lewiston about the unique structure of the evening; the most important lessons of the journeys; and why building community is so important in the theater industry.

Fifty years following the premiere of Mart Crowley's iconic pre-stonewall comedic drama about a group of gay men living in New York, The Boys in the Band offers an interesting perspective to modern audiences of the many issues which tend to plague a group of people who are seen as “different”, and how much (or rather, as audiences will likely find, how little) those issues have changed over time within the gay community. This wildly entertaining evening full of laughs, queens, booze, shirtless hunks, self-loathing, and lasagna is one which is sure to wow audiences with the exceptional performance of its cast, while providing deeper insights into what it means to be a societal outsider, and how that treatment often manifests itself both internally and externally.
