Renowned actor David Payne will portray author C.S. Lewis in 'An Evening with C.S. Lewis,' presented by the Montalvo Arts Center as part of its ongoing Carriage House Concert Series. In this delightful evening, the novelist, poet, essayist, academic, literary critic, and broadcaster has agreed to host a group of curious Americans in his simple house outside Oxford. What ensues is an enthralling performance that has captivated audiences worldwide. Full of humor, this dramatic solo shows offers a fascinating and highly entertaining insight into the man who penned more than 30 works including The Screwtape Letters, The Space Trilogy, and The Chronicles of Narnia. This performance will offer special resonance to attendees of the Bruce Munro at Montalvo: Stories in Light exhibit, which was inspired by Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia. 'An Evening with C.S. Irish Arts Center (IAC), a multidisciplinary center dedicated to bringing people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of Irish arts and culture, announces its Spring 2019 season a cross-section of the exhilarating theater, music, dance, literature, art, and genre-defying performance coming from Ireland and Irish America, alongside educational events engaging participants with an array of rich traditions. With performances as wide-ranging as Margaret McAuliffe's acclaimed one-woman play The Humours of Bandon, Declan O'Rourke's epic song cycle Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine, and Paul Muldoon's performance adaptation of a 1773 Irish poem, IAC provides an intimate home for artists' boldest visions. As construction on IAC's landmark permanent new home in Hell's Kitchen takes place just beyond the organization's original location, IAC's vast ambition and accomplishment will be on full display, outside and in, throughout Spring 2019.

Banda Magda Brings Global Music To Montalvo Arts Center This February

Montalvo Arts Center presents the unique fusion sounds of Banda Magda as part of the Carriage House Concert Series. Led by Greek-born composer, orchestrator, singer, and accordionist Magda Giannikou (Kronos Quartet), Banda Magda musically moves from samba to French chanson, from Greek folk tunes to Colombian cumbia and Afro-Peruvian lando. Drawing from the band's global background (Greece, Argentina, Japan, Colombia, USA), the group combines South American rhythms with jazz improvisation, cinematic arranging, sophisticated audience participation, mid-century classics, and world “chansons” sung in six languages. Today Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) confirmed that its 'Building a Better World' float will appear in the 92 nd Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade . This year GSUSA will celebrate girls who are building a better world through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). At a time when women account for half the college-educated workforce but fill just 29 percent of science and engineering occupations,Girl Scouts is cultivating girls' interest in these topics from an early age and helping them build valuable STEM skills so they can take the lead and positively influence our world.
